Special issue on 20 years of GIS Sol

The special issue of Etude et Gestion des Sols dedicated to the 20th anniversary of GIS Sol has just been published.

In 2021, the Groupement d'Intérêt Scientifique sur les Sols (GIS Sol) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A special issue of the journal Etude et Gestion des Sols has been designed to present all the activities carried out by the GIS Sol over the past 20 years, and how they respond to societal issues and public policies in the fields of health, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity protection and management, and urban planning policies.

(Arrouays et al., 2022), (Arrouays et al., 2023), (Bispo et al., 2025) (Brossard et al., 2023). (Martin et al., 2024), health (Froger et al., 2023), (Imbert et al., 2024), (Brunet et al., 2023). (Le Bas et al., 2024) (Rennes et al., 2023). (Renault et al., 2023) (Gascuel-Odoux et al., 2023).

This special issue includes 12 articles presenting the history of GIS Sol (Arrouays et al., 2022), its international activities (Arrouays et al., 2023), GIS Sol programmes (Bispo et al., 2025) and their implementation in the French overseas departments and regions (Brossard et al., 2023). Several articles are devoted to the use of soil data in the context of four public policies: climate change mitigation and adaptation (Martin et al., 2024), health (Froger et al., 2023), biodiversity protection and management (Imbert et al., 2024), and urban planning policies (Brunet et al., 2023). The issue of  management and dissemination of the data produced by the GIS Sol is then addressed in an article on the French soil information system (Le Bas et al., 2024) and in another on the legal status of the data (Rennes et al.,2023). Finally, the outlook is outlined in terms of the need for indicators of soil multifunctionality and health to support public policy (Renault et al., 2023) and those expressed by agricultural and environmental management stakeholders (Gascuel-Odoux et al., 2023).
