Setting soil health targets and thresholds in agricultural soils

The concept of soil health can be used as a tool to reverse soil degradation, but it must correspond to the needs of public policy. Thus, quantifiable indicators that show whether soils are fulfilling their expected functions need to be used. The evaluation of these indicators is based on the definition of robust targets and/or threshold values that determine the achievable levels of soil functions. But how these objectives and thresholds can be defined? This article presents and discusses four approaches to defining targets and thresholds, using case studies from Denmark, Italy and France. Help is also provided in choosing the most appropriate objective/threshold method in a given context.
