Can monitoring networks be harmonized in Europe?

For the first time, the European LUCAS Soil network has been compared with the national networks of the various European Union countries. This initial comparison showed that sampling strategies varied widely between the networks. The national networks provide better coverage of the territory, land use and soil types. The values for pH, carbon and clay content are very different between the European network and the national ones. Harmonisation of these networks would allow the advantages of each type of network to be taken into account.
